My family and I are taking a trip next week to visit our in-laws. My car is being fixed right now at the auto shop, so we would be using a rental car instead. Do I need to buy Texas rental car insurance coverage from rental companies or does my current insurance policy apply too to rented cars?

When renting a car, the first thing you should do is to call your personal auto insurer. There are important keys to discuss to make sure that you have enough coverage and practical rates should you need to add one. Since you’re using the car for personal use instead of business purposes, your current Texas car insurance coverage would usually still apply. Here are several areas to look at when discussing your coverage with your insurer:

  • Make sure that your insurance covers comprehensive and collision in case your car was stolen and/or in the event that your car was damaged due to an accident.
  • Check with your Texas insurance company if they would be covering administrative fees, loss of use (in case that your renter is still charging you the time at which you need to have the rented car fixed) and of course towing fees. There are some companies that provide this type of insurance rider covering some of these expenses.
  • If you think that it’s necessary to add Texas rental car insurance coverage to your current insurance, contact your personal car insurer and ask for daily rates. Evaluate whether it’s more practical for you to purchase it on a daily rate with your insurance company or to buy it through your preferred rental car company.

Knowing this information about rental car insurance coverage is as essential as preparing for the trip itself. This gives you a more assured convenience, knowing that you’re going to be taken cared of in case of unprecedented events.
